The importance of physiology in solving global health issues has never been clearer than in 2020. We have continued to give members a platform and voice, to raise the visibility of physiology within the scientific community and more widely to policymakers and the public.
“For PraxisAuril, being involved in this kind of “deep dive” activity is valuable because it helps us to see different modes of knowledge exchange and where new approaches to training might be needed. Sometimes this will be about involving new stakeholders in existing training, so that the context for application is clear, but might extend to creating a new product.”

“Time spent teaching physiology to medical students is becoming increasingly brief as the curriculum becomes ever more crowded. It is therefore timely that The Physiological Society has recognised the need to support those responsible for teaching medical students the fundamental mechanisms of physiology that underpin their careers by providing specifically designed objectives for undergraduates.”

“The response to the pandemic has been framed primarily in terms of minimising the exposure of the over 65s to COVID-19… It is important to ensure that older people feel they have more control over their lives and that they receive clearer guidance about how to manage their health and wellbeing, both now and beyond this pandemic. With so much information available (both good-intentioned and otherwise) to older people through a variety of different media, working with The Physiological Society has brought rigorous scientific data and physiological understanding to tackling issues of national importance both in the immediate and long term.”
Dr Alison Giles, Centre for Ageing Better, London, UK
“The driving force of the COVID-19 Advisory Panel was to enable physiologists to provide the operational support to the medics dealing with patients, and to ensure they benefited from the latest thinking and analysis. We also established a question-and-answer forum on The Physiological Society website, to allow clinicians to send questions to the group for consideration. Within 24 hours we aimed to have an evidence-based response prepared for online posting. This helped improve the clinical understanding of the disease and inform best practice.”
