Developing the careers of our members

Aside from scientific conferences, we also provided bespoke professional development for our members, and this came in several guises: training webinars, prizes, the opportunity to run webinars and more.

Future Physiology 2020: Our first online conference, and one of the first in the sector

“As an African physiologist from the smallest and one of the least developed nations of the continent, where physiology education is not that advanced, attending this virtual conference came with a lot of unique advantages…Despite the differences in culture, religion, ethnic and cultural backgrounds of the participants, we came together as a family to share knowledge and research done in different continents and to network, all with the aim of improving lives.”

Dr Mariam Jaw Mbowe, Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, The Gambia

262 participants from 36 countries

71% said they now feel more confident networking online

85% of participants said the conference increased enthusiasm for their work

Bespoke professional development to meet the needs of our members

“The webinars have been extremely beneficial to my development during my PhD, particularly in the age of a pandemic. They are run frequently, easily accessible and provide a wide range of tips that I have been able to apply. In addition, it has been great to see diverse topic areas in physiology represented.”

Josh Osofa, University of Portsmouth, UK

14 professional development webinars

482 members attended the webinars

72 attended more than one webinar

Mentoring from The Journal of Physiology’s Editorial Board: upskilling the next generation in publishing

“I was very happy to serve as an Editorial Board Fellow of The Journal of Physiology. I really enjoyed the perspective and insight gained from handling manuscripts on the other side of the peer review process. I strongly recommend that early career physiologists apply to this excellent scheme.”

Dr Ching-Yi Tsai, Institute for Translational Research in Biomedicine, Kaohsiung City, Taiwan

60+ applications from The Journal of Physiology Editorial Board

8 Fellows appointed to the position

Prizes for early career researchers

“I was honoured to be awarded the Michael J Rennie Oral Communication Prize for the best oral communication by an early career researcher. This was particularly rewarding as I am interested in pursuing a career in science communication. In addition to building on my physiology knowledge and presentation skills, Future Physiology 2020 also gave me additional confidence to pursue my career goals.”

Masa Svent, University of Leicester, Leicester, UK

6 prizes awarded to early career researchers
